WMS/DOWEA Dress Code
As the mercury begins to rise and the winter coats finally find their way to the back of the closet, it’s time for a seasonal wardrobe refresh at Wiesbaden Middle School (WMS). While the sunshine is a welcome change, students are reminded to keep the dress code in mind when picking out their spring and summer outfits.
The goal of the policy isn't to dampen your style, but to ensure everyone stays "Dressed for Learning" in a way that is safe and respectful for our school community.
When the weather gets hot, it’s tempting to reach for the shortest shorts or the thinnest tank tops, but the DoWEA-wide policy has specific "coverage" requirements to keep in mind:
-
The "Mid-Thigh" Rule: Shorts, skirts, and dresses must fully cover the body from the armpit to the mid-point of the thigh. Note that DoDEA has moved away from the old "fingertip length" rule in favor of this mid-thigh standard.
-
Top Coverage: All tops must have sleeves during the regular school day. Spaghetti straps, halter tops, and strapless shirts should be saved for the weekend.
-
No "Midriff" Zones: Shirts must meet the top of your waistband. If you raise your arms and skin shows, the shirt is too short for school.
-
Footwear Safety: While sandals are great BUT remember that bedroom slippers and slides are not permitted. Shoes should be sturdy enough for moving through busy hallways and stairs.
Even in the heat, certain items remain off-limits to maintain a focused environment:
-
See-Through Fabrics: Clothing should not be transparent or reveal undergarments.
-
Headgear: While you can wear a hood on your sweatshirt outside, hoods and hats must be down and off while inside the school building.
-
Inappropriate Imagery: Avoid any clothing displaying violent, lewd, or discriminatory language, or anything promoting substances like alcohol or drugs.
Pro-Tip: If you’re ever unsure if an outfit is "WMS-ready," the best rule of thumb is to bring a hoodie or a change of clothes just in case. When in doubt, ask a staff member before the first bell rings!
Let’s enjoy the warm weather and keep our focus on finishing the school year strong.
